Raid 5 Data Recovery

If you run any serve high-traffic application that serves other people where there is an expectation of security for your data you will need to have some type of disk array system in place. Raid 5 data recovery schemes write the data on several discs at once to allow you to have a failure of any single drive and not lose your data. This is very similar to a raid 1 data recovery approach. However the differences are in how the data is written to the different discs. In both cases the objective is redundancy and your data is written to more than one disk at once. But these different raid array approaches use very different methodologies to achieve the redundancy. As a result they have different strengths and weaknesses as well.

Raid 1 data recovery will be very strong but will be slow. In this approach the data is written to multiple disk simultaneously. You literally have a complete duplicate copy of your data on a second hard drive. This will give you warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that your data is secure. However it is also slow to read and write data from two drives at once.

Raid 5 data recovery still achieves his redundancy but doesn't write the data directly to two disks in 1 a  mirror. Instead, the data is written to disks in a rotating fashion. With raid 5 you are writing two different disk in a round robin way much like load balancing is done. Raid 5 also introduces the idea of purity. When people say they are running a disk array with parity it means they can lose one drive and still function. In this regard it is similar to a mirrored raid array. However if you use more than one drive your array will break.
